IPMobileNet’s IP Series is well-suited to the requirements of bus and light rail transportation systems. For buses, vehicle location and scheduling is essential. IPMobileNet mobile radio/modems are equipped with integrated GPS receivers, allowing dispatchers and supervisors to track the progress of buses. The wireless IP connectivity also allows bus locations to be sent back to dispatchers, where the data can be shared at “smart signs” in bus stops (advising passengers when the next bus is due). The wireless data link provided by the IP Series system provides wireless connectivity for other data, including data messages to and from buses, real-time telemetry reading from on-board sensors, status reports, bus-to-bus and bus-to-dispatcher messaging, revenue and passenger counts, alarms, and more. Once the radio infrastructure is in place, data connectivity can be utilized in other transit vehicles, such as supervisor vehicles and paratransit.

Train and light rail use mobile data in many of the same ways. While their routes are fixed, monitoring onboard systems is essential for passenger safety and scheduling. Base station sites are selected along train routes, and often directional antennas can be used for maximum coverage. Dispatchers, service departments and supervisors can use the IP Series system to monitor train speed, onboard telemetry systems, passenger counts, train progress/location/schedule, and a variety other mobile data transactions.
The IP Series rugged design, combined with its ability to handle many small data transactions makes it a perfect solution for tracking and monitoring mobile assets such as trains and buses.
